Companionship in Community: Rafael and Martina's Story
Healthy aging is about more than just staying physically active and eating well; it’s also about fostering strong social connections and having access to stable housing. For Rafael and Martina, residents of FSL’s Vianney Villas, these elements have been crucial to their well-being. Their story is a testament to how FSL’s integrated approach to housing and health care can make a significant impact on the lives of older adults.
A Love Story Across Borders
Rafael and Martina’s journey began in different cities: Rafael in Phoenix and Martina in San Luis, Mexico. Their paths crossed when Rafael, a volunteer at a senior center, met Martina’s mother. After a heartfelt introduction and persistent calls from Rafael, the couple married in Yuma and began their life together in Vianney Villas, an FSL community offering affordable rents in Avondale.
Their marriage in 2018 has since been characterized by companionship and teamwork. “It’s much more about companionship and working together. If there is a problem, we solve it together,” they shared.
Life at Vianney Villas
Rafael and Martina’s life at Vianney Villas highlights the importance of stable, holistic housing. Since moving in after their marriage, they’ve built a routine that keeps them active and engaged. They start their day early with a walk and take care of their plants. Rafael, despite his own health challenges, helps other residents by taking out their trash.
Financial stability is another crucial aspect of their lives. With utilities included in their rent and assistance from onsite health programs, they can focus on their health and well-being without the stress of financial uncertainty.
The Role of FSL’s Community Health Workers
FSL’s innovative pilot program at Vianney Villas aims to address the social determinants of health of residents. Yvonne, a FSL community health worker, has been a pivotal figure in the community; her presence has transformed the social dynamics among residents, creating a more cohesive and supportive environment.
Yvonne organizes activities such as bingo, birthday celebrations, and educational sessions on topics like scams and fraud prevention. These activities not only provide entertainment but also foster a sense of community and belonging. “We used to just come get our coffee and leave, and now we stay and get to know one another,” Martina said.

Avoiding Fraud and Scams in a Senior Living Community
Rafael’s story highlights the vulnerability of many seniors to scams and fraud. Unable to read or write, Rafael fell victim to a scam that enrolled him in unnecessary hospice services. Thankfully, Yvonne intervened, canceled the fraudulent services, and now helps Rafael and Martina navigate their mail and medical bills.
“She is an angel for us who don’t speak English. She parks her car right in front of our apartment, so we always look to see when she will arrive,” Rafael shared.
We used to just come get our coffee and leave, and now we stay and get to know one another.
