How FSL's Weatherization Program Changed Kathy’s Life

How FSL’s Weatherization Program Changed Kathy’s Life

Mesa resident Kathy lives on a fixed Social Security income. Last summer, she found herself struggling to keep her mobile home cool as temperatures soared. Living on a budget means Kathy often has to “save six months in advance for anything [she] needs.” As temperatures climbed, her aging air conditioner ran non-stop, barely cooling her home but driving her monthly energy bill to a staggering $340. This expense was more than she could comfortably afford, but thanks to FSL’s Weatherization Assistance Program, Kathy’s situation has improved dramatically.

With her old air conditioner replaced by a modern, energy-efficient model, along with shade screens on her windows, Kathy’s monthly energy bill dropped to $130. “Now it’s not only cooler,” she shared, “but my bill has been cut in half.” This change lifted a heavy burden off her shoulders, freeing up her limited income to cover other needs. Kathy expressed her gratitude, saying, “When you grow up, you don’t think about needing to ask for help, but these guys never made me feel that way.”

The High Demand for Weatherization Services in Arizona

As Arizona faced record-breaking temperatures this summer, FSL’s Weatherization Program saw a surge in applications from homeowners in need of cooling solutions. “Everyone seemed to be in crisis,” noted Katie Martin, FSL’s spokesperson. For many, the program provided life-saving relief, especially for seniors like Kathy who “scrape and save” to remain in their homes.

FSL’s Weatherization Program doesn’t just support vulnerable residents; it also offers critical employment opportunities. However, the industry faces a looming challenge: nearly 41% of contractors are expected to retire over the next decade, leaving a potential skills gap. FSL is actively seeking individuals interested in training and certification in weatherization and energy efficiency, where they can make a real impact in people’s lives.

As Kathy shared, “There are so many people who need help and just don’t want to ask for it.” FSL’s program provides assistance with respect and dignity, making a meaningful difference for Arizona’s seniors.

“The scary part of this industry is that in the next 10 years, 41% of the contractors are going to be retiring and I don’t think there are enough people to fill those spots.”
